Our Festa Committee is busy organizing the two day festival. We are bringing back the Salami Toss and have added the Gaylords to our entertainment lineup. Singer Moreno Fruzzetti and the Italica and Don Garibaldi bands will be returning to Festa Italiana. Every year, Northern California’s Italian community gathers together for two days of Italian style food, music, dancing, fun, and friendship at festa. This year’s festa will again be held at the Croatian Center on Auburn Boulevard. Festa Scholarship Pageant – applications are now being accepted for young ladies (ages 16 to 22) of Italian descent interested in competing in the Festa Scholarship Pageant. SFIAC in North Beach
The Northern California Italian-American community is poised to celebrate Festa Coloniale Italiana, August 16, on San Francisco’s Washington Square. The all-day festival, which highlights the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club’s 90th Anniversary and founding of the North Beach Italian historical district, is free and open to the public. The event will include Italian music and entertainment, historic notes by Mayor Gavin Newsom, Attorney General Joe Rosiniello, former Supervisor Angela Alioto and Supervisor Erin Peskin along with local historians.

Traditional Italian food and drink as well as thematic arts and crafts will be available beginning at 9 AM, along with free tours of the impressive SFIAC building-longtime site of many weddings and other memorable events. A modestly priced traditional Italian dinner will be offered in the SFIAC ballroom at the conclusion of the day’s events, around 5 PM. Featured among favorite North Beach musicians and entertainers for the festival are: Aurora Mandolin Orchestra, Trio Amore, Bella Ciao, Steve Albini Quartet, and The Ricco Dancers.

Bocce Theme Picnic

Like Bocce? Or maybe want to learn how to play? Either way, schedule Sunday, August 3, as your day in the sun. the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club is hosting a Bocce Picnic and informal Tournament for members, family, friends and the general public. (No, you don’t have to be an expert or even good at it.) Bocce play will be followed by a fabulous outdoor feast. We will field 16 teams with a minimum of four people per team. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. The event will be held at Marin Bocce Federation, Albert Park, 550 B Street, San Rafael, 9 AM to 5 PM. The Institute copresents with the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival Mimmo Calopresti’s documentary I only Wanted to Live. This outstanding documentary follows nine Italian citizens who endured the Italian racial laws and survived deportation and internment at Auschwitz. Masterfully directed by Calopresti and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, it features searing testimonies; most compelling is the story of Lilian Segre of Milan whose dignity and articulation of her experience are quite remarkable. The screening on Volevo Solo Vivere at the Castro Theatre on July 27th will be followed by an onstage interview with Liliana Segre and director Mimmo Calopresti.
